Sabetha Says “Eat More Green Beans!”

In class tonight I got to have a great conversation with some of my students about always making their expectations of themselves in everything they do be higher than those in authority or a position of judgement above them.  For example, if a teacher at school has expectations of you, your job is to have your expectations of yourself be higher than those of your teachers!  This works in sports, your personal life, your work life with your boss, etc.  How successful could you be if your expectations of yourself were higher than everyone around you in all those places.  I asked one student what would happen if she went home and was more behaved for her mom then even her mom could ever dream of and she said that would be great but then her mom would expect her to do even more chores, I aksed her, “Is that really a bad thing?”  I told her, “How do you know you wouldn’t like doing more chores and helping out more until you tried it?”  We miss out on so many opportunities to be great because we think we won’t like it, or we make excuses that it might be too hard so we never try.  I asked the class, “How do you know whether or not you like green beans until you try them?”  Some agreed they really like green beans.  Then I asked them if in everything they did they made their expectations for themselves higher than anyone else had for them and if they tried new things even if it looked hard what could they possibly accomplish…… one student said, “Well then I could be the first female president.” We all agreed that could very well be true. The morale of the story was…….eat more green beans and you could become president……well you get the jist.
